Who is responsible for your data

Akash Bhattacharjee, who writes this site as Ami Doogloo. You can reach me at akashandthat@gmail.com.

What I collect, why, and on what basis

Browsing this site. The site sets no cookies and runs no analytics or tracking scripts, and the fonts are served from this site rather than from Google.

Signing up for new explainers. If you leave your email in the "Want the next one?" box, your browser sends it straight to Kit, the email service I use, so Kit also sees your IP address, browser details and the page you signed up on. Kit holds your address as unconfirmed and sends you one email asking you to confirm. It won't send you anything else until you click it. After that I email you when a new explainer is out and, now and then, about things I'm working on, including anything I sell. My basis is your consent, which you can withdraw any time with the unsubscribe link in every email or by emailing me.

Kit's emails contain a tiny image and tracked links, so Kit records whether you open each email and which links you click. I use that to see which explainers people find useful.

Asking for an explainer on Instagram. If you comment on one of my posts or message me on Instagram, my replies are sent through ManyChat. It receives your Instagram name, username and profile picture, whether you follow me, the messages you send and any email address you give. If you give me your email there, it goes to Kit, which sends you the explainer you asked for. As the message asking for it says, you also join my email list: new explainers and, now and then, things I'm working on, including anything I sell. You can get the explainer without giving your email, and you can unsubscribe any time. My basis is your consent.

Emailing me. If you email me, I get your email address and whatever you write. I use it to reply, which is in both our legitimate interests.

Please don't send me personal medical details. If you do, I won't use them and I'll delete them.

Who else handles it

The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which keeps server logs, including IP addresses, to run the site and protect it from attacks. That's in my legitimate interest in keeping the site working and secure. Its privacy policy explains how.

Kit stores the email list and sends the emails. ManyChat handles the Instagram messages. Both act on my instructions. My email is a Gmail account, so Google stores the emails you send me. Instagram is run by Meta, under its own privacy policy.

Kit, ManyChat, Cloudflare and Google are US companies, so your data goes to the US. ManyChat, Cloudflare and Google take part in the UK Extension to the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Kit covers transfers from the UK with standard contractual clauses and the UK's international data transfer agreement, in its data processing agreement.

I never sell your data.

How long I keep it

You stay on the email list until you unsubscribe. After that the emails stop, and Kit keeps your record marked as unsubscribed; ask me and I'll delete it completely. Instagram conversations stay in ManyChat until you ask me to delete them. I keep emails while our conversation is useful, and I delete them sooner if you ask.

Your rights

You can ask me for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to limit how I use it, or to send it to you in a format you can reuse. You can object to anything I do on the basis of legitimate interests, and you can withdraw your consent at any time. Email me and I'll reply within one month. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
